Like many famous bands Modest Mouse started in “The Shed.” It began when band members Issac Brock (vocalist/guitarist), Eric Judy (bassist), and Jeremiah Green (drummer) made musical sounds from a practice space built by Issac Brock. The space was located just next to Brock’s mother’s trailer. Soon they moved on to more professional pastures and presented their first self-titled single at Calvin Johnson’s Dub Narcotic Studios and released it on Johnson’s K Records label. That was in 1994, a year after Modest Mouse rock trio was formed.
In 1996, Modest Mouse move on to Up label and issued two LPs titles “This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About” and “Interstate 8.” Soon, Modest Mouse returned to Johnson’s K Records and continued producing. “The Fruit That Ate Itself” was released in 1997 and later that year the record that caught everyone’s attention “The Lonesome Crowded West” was released. Modest Mouse’s lyrics always grabbed listeners as well they were honest and heartfelt. They often stood out in contrast to the music. The quality of the lyrics were clearly one step ahead of the the musical sounds they produced. However, that gap was bridged with the release of “The Lonesome Crowded West.” Track after track presented gripping music and lyrics. Portraits of many different characters set to varying musical styles proved that song writer Issac Brock was in complete control. Modest Mouse’s talent was fully realized and this led to their signing with Sony.
Not long after, in 2000, Modest Mouse came up with Moon & Antarctica. Again the ability of Modest Mouse to present bazaar lyrics with music to match was proved. Though the album was not as good as “The Lonesome Crowded West” the punk rock style and lyrical depth did not disappoint fans; songs were catchy, songs were jazzy, and songs were suicidal. Modest Mouse managed to make a clear image and present their artistically talented bitterness to attract many listeners.
The best selling album of Modest Mouse is “Good News for People Who Love Bad News.” Though there were other projects and songs produced on the side by Issac Brock, he never failed Modest Mouse in giving his best. His music clutches and his lyrics confuse. When they are put together they arouse audiences excitedly. “Good News for People Who Love Bad News” became a Top 40 hit and their most popular album.
The newest Modest Mouse album is “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank.” It was released in March, 2007 and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr added in his song writing and guitar playing skills to this album. Johnny Marr also toured with the band for this album. Modest Mouse has succeeded in continuing to keep its core character strong and at the same time has developed its style pleasantly over the years.
